Please help me welcome my newest client, picture book author, Kelly Zhang! I first spotted the pitch for her beautiful, lyrical picture book TAKE ME TO LAOLAO during the #PBPitch event. When it landed in my inbox I immediately fell in love with this story about a little girl with a big heart and an even bigger imagination who goes on a Chinese mythology-inspired adventure to visit her Laolao (Grandma) during the Spring Lantern Festival. This reverie-like journey incorporates motifs and magical figures from Chinese mythology/folklore, and the lyrical text draws imagery from classic Chinese poetry of the Tang & Song Dynasties (~600-1200 AD). It was so moving and relatable, especially now given the separation from loved ones we’re all experiencing.
