Recent Reads: Bed of Roses

January 11th, 2010 • Kate

bed_rosesI devoured the first book in Nora Roberts‘ new “Bride Quartet” a few months ago, and last week, did the same with Book Two, Bed of Roses. There’s a reason Roberts is the Queen of Romance, people: even when it seems like her stories are simple love stories, she always manages to add some true depth. I usually find it in her secondary characters — and in a series like this, it’s especially so, since the secondary characters in one book end up the romantic lead in the next. If you liked the romantic leads in book one, you can read book two for a sort of epilogue.

Anyway: good story. I laughed, I cried, I eagerly read the teaser chapter of book three at the end to see if I was right as to who would be the featured couple in book three (Yes, I was).

Are you a Nora Roberts fan? Which are your favorite books? If you’ve never tried and are looking for an easy starting point (since the sheer number of titles she’s published can seem overwhelming), I recommend the Chesapeake Bay Saga if you like contemporary romances (books 1, 2, 3, and 4), or the Gallaghers of Ardmore trilogy (1, 2, and 3) if you want a little magic (and Ireland!) in your romance.

Full disclosure: By my nature as a literary agent, I get a commission on sales of books by my clients, through any eventual royalties. My links to any Amazon pages also earns me a small fee, if you click through and buy a copy. Though you should also feel free to support your local library — which is where I got my copy of this title.

All I read as a senior in high school was Nora Roberts and you just named my two favorite series: The Quinns and the Gallaghers. She has a magical way with characters – especially family members. I strive to write characters like Roberts does – ones you wish you knew in real life! I haven't read her in awhile, but have just ordered BRIDE QUARTET because of this post. Thanks!

Oh no, love her as JD Robb writing crime stories about Detective Dallas & her sexy Roarke.

I haven't read an adult book in a few years (other than Jane Austen and a few other classics). I started reading YA because that's what I write, but there's so many great YA books I haven't read yet (and I've read tons so far) that I don't have time to read an adult book. But if I ever have the chance, I'll sure to check out Nora Roberts.

I think this series is my favorite Roberts that I've read, actually. After reading the first two from the library, I actually bought them to reread (which I don't do often with romance).

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her J.D. Robb series so I've just recently started picking up her Nora Roberts novels. Some of them are too fluffy for me. The people fall too fast and they all seem to end with marriage and a baby. It's a little too sweet for me. I like things to blow up and a good murder mixed in-lol. But I just recently read Birthright and loved it! I also enjoyed the Chesapeake Bay series, the Key Trilogy and the Born Trilogy. I haven't tried the Bride Quartet yet because I thought it might be a bit of that fall fast and marry with a baby ending, but I think I'll give it a try since you recommended it! 🙂

My favorite Nora Robert books were the key trilogy. I forget the name, but the books were a lot of fun to read. I'm with Stina, I usually read YA since that's what I write. Nora Roberts is always a happy read though, I may have to check this one out 🙂
