New Year, New Goals, and Old Numbers

January 4th, 2010 • Kate

numbersWelcome back to the blog! I can’t believe it’s been two weeks since my last regular post. I guess we kind of skipped over all the regular end-of-year/start-of-new-year posting, didn’t we? Herewith, a brief recap of last year, by the numbers:

  • I had 3 books I sold reach the New York Times bestseller list,
  • Held a hotly contested auction for a client, with 8 bidders,
  • Welcomed 4 new clients to the kt literary fold,
  • Parted ways with 2 authors,
  • Closed 9 new deals for domestic rights,
  • Sold a title in 22 foreign markets — a new record for me!
  • Received over 3500 queries and asked for 82 partials,
  • Met with more than 60 editors at the Bologna Book Fair,
  • Only read 36 books for pleasure,
  • Went to NYC for meetings 3 times, and
  • Spoke at 4 conferences or workshops.

That’s just a few of the highlights. In 2010, I’d love to go to even more conferences and workshops, and I look forward once again to a very busy Bologna. I’m not sure how many more clients I want to take on at this point, but I think there’s still room for growth.

My big resolution for 2010 is to sell something for every client I retain! What’s your plan for the New Year?

My plan is to give you more manuscripts to sell!

My plan for the new year is to get an agent, sell a manuscript and continue to finish all the works in progress I have. On a personal front, meet my husband (know anyone?) and buy a house!

Well, I just posted today about how I so don't do resolutions — but my plan is to finish revisions on my YA ms and begin the query process in the next month or so. I'm also judging my first writing contest for a regional conference I'm attending this year and am excited about it.

Oh yeah, and I'm attending your agent event w/ Kristin Nelson in a few weeks and CANNOT wait to hear your thoughts about reading first pages! 2010 feels like a great year already 🙂

Goals for this year… Finish editing. Sign with an agent and sell my book.

Personal goals are to take better care of my health. Go to bed by midnight every night. Make enough money doing freelance writing that I can take the summer off with my 5 year-old and do some fun things.

I think you have an artifact from an earlier draft hanging under your post. “and I want to fix that, to some degree. Before I”

My plans include buy a house, go back to school (at least one class per semester) and do a rewrite on a couple of first drafts that are just sitting around.

First, congratulations on an awesome year! You wrote that you "only read 36 books for pleasure." Considering all the other big numbers you tackled, it's hard to believe you had time to read for pleasure at all!

As for me, my plan is to write. A lot.

  7. Amy Says:

My goal is to send you two more books this year. Considering one will be coming in a few days… this seems doable.

  8. Shannon Says:

My plan for 2010 is to sell houses while I look for an agent. I also need to get my second book out of my head and on paper before it drives me crazy.
