Hard work?, you ask. Sure. Bestsellers don’t just happen — unless you’re Dan Brown. It takes an amazing team of authors, editors, marketing geniuses, and dedicated, wonderful booksellers to take a book that was originally published a year ago and propel it to the bestseller list. I couldn’t be happier!

As I mentioned yesterday, it’s a short week here at kt literary, and though that means a couple of days off from the blog, that’s no excuse to start slacking on Monday, right? Right!

So, I figured I’d take a moment today, in the spirit of the upcoming holiday, and say THANKS to you guys. Not just for reading and commenting on the blog, which means a lot to me, but also for you as writers. It may seem like we agents complain a lot about the contents of our inboxes, and the quality of the queries we receive, but underneath all that is the hopeful expectation every time we open a new message that this is the one that’s going to blow our socks off. So thanks for keeping me in a state of anticipation.

I think we’ve built a nice little community here, and for that, I’m grateful to YOU. And to show it, I’m going to give away one of the new mass market paperback editions of Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle. All you have to do to enter is comment here and say one thing you’re thankful for. I’d love to have some of the lurkers out there pop in with a comment as well — you might say I’d be especially thankful.

Next week, after the holiday, I’ll do a little random number generator thingie to pick one commenter and email them for their address. If the winner already has a copy of this book, I’ll happily mail it to the person of your choosing, already wrapped in your choice of holiday paper. How’s that for a full service agency?

Don’t believe I’m full-service? Check out this YouTube video direct from a series of conversations I’ve had with MJ.

Readergirlz and guyz all over the country rocked the drop, leaving YA novels all over the place to teens to pick up.

Which is a great and fabulous cause, of course, but why am I mentioning it NOW? Well, remember back in November, when I gave away a copy of Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle to JenFW for her winning question for that month’s round of “Ask An Editor”? In fact, I also sent Jen a copy of Band Geek Love by Josie Bloss, and was pleased to share a few of my books with a reader.

Well, Jen did me one better, and after reading and enjoying both books, she dropped both Band Geek Love and Let It Snow in Operation TBD! Here’s her recap of the events, and here’s the readergirlz blog featuring Jen’s drops!

Way to go, Jen!

Did anyone else participate in Operation TBD ’09? I didn’t, officially, but I always try to leave some of my recent reads where they might be picked up by someone else whenever I can. Airports and airplanes are great for this! What about you? Do you ever leave books where you finish them, or try to pass them on some other way?

And while, yes, it’s Italy in the Spring, with all the good food, great scenery, nice weather and such that that implies, but it’s also a lot of work. Work I’m looking forward to — don’t get me wrong, but work nonetheless.

And since I’ve been whinging lately about everything I need to do, I thought I’d share some of that with you, to give you a sense of what happens at the fair.

First of all, over the last few weeks I’ve been putting together my rights list, which contains pages on each of the books I’ll be featuring at the fair and talking about with foreign publishers. This doesn’t include all of my titles, but does have a page or more on recent releases (like Evermore by Alyson Noel) and upcoming titles (like Operation Redwood by S. Terrell French and Powerless by Matthew Cody). Because many scouts read deal reports on Publishers Lunch, I’ve also got a page for my recent deal for Hunted by Sara Beitia, though that book has a Fall 2010 pub date. Each page contains an image of the cover (where available), an author photo, a brief description of the book, an author bio, contact information for translation or dramatic rights, and any other necessary pieces of information to help make a sale. For The Unnameables by Ellen Booraem, for instance, I included an excerpt from the starred Kirkus review and an icon indicating it had been picked by the Junior Library Guild. For Scarlett Fever by Maureen Johnson, there’s also reviews and information for Suite Scarlett and Let It Snow. Evermore‘s page includes a burst celebrating it as a #1 New York Times bestseller, as well as a growing list of international sales.

So, that went out a couple of weeks ago to scouts and my subagents, but there’s still updates to be made. Eventually (as in, before I leave on Thursday, but probably not too much before), I will take the file to my nearby Kinko’s and have it printed out in full-color to put in a binder I can use for show and tell in my meetings in Italy.

Because I don’t want the editors I’m meeting with to spend too much time looking down or reading the material I’ve prepared, I’ve also put together a powerpoint presentation with three or four bullet points on each title, so they can see the cover of each book, get the most pertinent details, and we can have more of a conversation about them.

Then, I printed out all my submission logs so I can see where a title has sold or been submitted, hoping that I’ll have my computer with me most of the time, but knowing sometimes it’s easier to just have the information I need on a piece of paper right in front of me, rather than having to look it up each time. I’ve also got a status report on all of my titles, an extra thick stack of business cards to give away, and a brand new little notebook to make notes on all my meetings.

Again, though I’ll have them all with me on my computer, I’ve also got submission copies of the manuscripts that are ready to send out on a little 2GB flash drive. i know some of my colleagues bring CDs with teasers of manuscripts or even fulls to give out to people they’re meeting with — I’m hoping to do most of my followup when I get home, although the flash drive gives me the opportunity to get something to someone right away if need be.

There’s always the hope of a fast, frantic sale happening at a fair, though that’s less likely in today’s internet age. But still — a girl can dream!

Tomorrow, a little bit about what my days at the fair will look like. Unless you have specific questions about what goes on in Bologna?

First, this review of Let it Snow by Jocelyn over at Teen Book Review. To quote: “Maureen Johnson can always be counted on for hilarity and cheer! I loved it. I laughed out loud. In Target.”
Next, while Robe-Daphne was posting on my behalf, other agents put up some automatic posts as well. (Although they may not have used a robot with a shoe fetish.) Nathan Bransford answered the question of how you can tell if your work is a YA novel with appeal to adults, or an adult novel with appeal to YAs. In part, he writes:

To me the separation between YA and Adult is not necessarily thematic, it has more to do with pacing and presentation. When you read a YA novel the pace tends to be quicker, the books tend to be shorter, and things happen in a more straightforward fashion. While of course there is a ton of variation and exceptions, things tend to unfold on the surface to keep a younger reader interested and engaged.

Check it out!
Lots of authors were busy too. Justine Larbalestier inaugurated “January is Writing Advice Month,” and you wouldn’t do bad to follow all her posts on the subject. She also shared her opinion on the old adage “Write What You Know.” Well worth a close read!
I’m sure I missed other exciting posts and helpful hints over the holidays. What links did you come across that are worth sharing? Post ‘em in the comments!

Rexroth woke me very suddenly this morning, from a pleasant dream of cashmere hoodies and comfortable peep-toe pumps, in order to announce a blizzard moving across the land. Well, ok, not "the land" in general, but more specifically, where we're trying to get for Christmas. So, in order to avoid any holiday movie moments such as being stuck in a dingy roadside motel for four days, celebrating the holidays with a gasoline-scented Christmas tree and a motel clerk named "Otis," we may be heading out early. Which gives today, my last day in the office for two weeks, a sense of urgency.

Well, ok, not “the land” in general, but more specifically, where we’re trying to get for Christmas. So, in order to avoid any holiday movie moments such as being stuck in a dingy roadside motel for four days, celebrating the holidays with a gasoline-scented Christmas tree and a motel clerk named “Otis,” we may be heading out early. Which gives today, my last day in the office for two weeks, a sense of urgency. In the sense of “oh my god I have so much to do, how am I ever going to get it done?!?!?!”
So, we may not have the full breath of robo posts I’d hoped for in the next two weeks, but I can at least give you some of the news that I’ve been collecting. As there’s a theme here about blizzards, let’s talk about Let It Snow, shall we?
Fyrefly’s Book Blog reports

What is that strange sensation? Ah yes, that must be the melting of the frozen cockles of my cold, dead heart. Because: Aww! Let it Snow was a wonderful quick little post-finals, pre-Christmas read; a perfect mix of humor and charm and realistic teenagers and snappy dialogue and romance that is heartwarming without being cloying or saccharine.

And YALSA, which had previously posted a longer review, adds Let it Snow to a list of must-have collections and anthologies.
But wait! There’s more! Parenthetical.net blogs

The authors managed to make this generic suburban town (in which the main settings are people’s homes and cars, a Waffle House, and a Starbucks) feel as quirky and lovingly created as something out of Garrison Keillor.

Finally, don’t miss Books With Wings’ post about Let it Snow. It’s actually snowing ON THE PAGE!
And that’s it for me for the year. Thanks to all my authors, readers, and commenters for making this year such a brilliant kickoff for kt literary. Happy Holidays to you and all of yours. Stay warm and safe inside, with a great book.
Cheers!

Every single time the general walks into the theatre at his old inn, and all the army men who served with him in WWII are there, and they all stand up to attention — man, I’m getting goosebumps just writing about it. And that’s nothing compared to the waterworks that pour out of my eyes every time I watch it. But you guys came up with some other really good choices as well!
So, Rena, email me with your mailing address, and I’ll get a copy of Let It Snow out to you promptly!
All this talk about weeping has got me thinking. What book always brings you to tears? Or, if you’re me, what book caused such weeping on first read that though it’s one of your favorites, you’ve never managed to read it again after that first, impressionable time? (That would be The Chestry Oak by Kate Seredy.) Sing out in the comments!

Devoted readers of MJ’s blog will recall a previous brouhaha when a school in Oklahoma tried to ban Maureen’s book The Bermudez Triangle. And because I’m in a holiday mood — the Christmas tunes certainly help. How can you be anything but cheery listening to the Barenaked Ladies’ FREE version of “Jingle Bells”? — I’m GIVING AWAY another galley of Let it Snow! Here’s how to enter: rack your brains and your knowledge of Daphne to try to figure out my favorite Christmas movie of all time. First person who gets it right wins a little holiday cheer in the mail. And there’s a hint: for all I love me some “A Year Without a Santa Claus,” the important word is “movie.” Go to town!
And even if you get it wrong, you’ll possibly be introducing me to another great holiday film, or sharing YOUR favorite!
