Isn't it Romantic?

| | Comments (0)

We have a special affinity for Valentine's Day around here, and I was tickled pink to see the V-Day reference on this article about the opening of kt literary in New West. I love how books and romance are so often intertwined. What are your favorite book-related love stories? Personally, I'm fond of the idea that Gideon DeFoe wrote the first Pirates! book in an attempt to woo a woman, although that wasn't quite a successful attempt (the wooing, not the book. The book is awesome and funny). Leave your love stories in the comments!

Band Geek Love getting some love!

The YA, YA, YAs (three YA librarians with a great blog) dish about some great upcoming YA titles, including BAND GEEK LOVE by our own Josie Bloss, whose title they love. They also mention SUITE SCARLETT, the Class of 2k8, and a slew of other great-sounding books I'm looking forward to reading.

Win a copy of Suite Scarlett!

In the last few days of her residency over at insideadog, Maureen Johnson is sponsoring a contest to win a galley of SUITE SCARLETT. All you have to do? Add a zombie!

I can't wait to read some of the entries. Maybe I can apply to be one of MJ's zombie expert friends...

Ranting about reviews

| | Comments (1)

Normally, it just isn't "done" for an author to complain loudly and publicly about a review. HOWEVER, if said review is about other writers' books? And if the reviewer goes so far to say that "I sometimes wonder how any self-respecting author of speculative fiction can find fulfillment in writing novels for young readers." Well, then authors are inclined to get mad, and say so in public (or on the blogosphere, which is pretty much the same thing). kt literary client Matthew Cody responds:

Them's fighting words! To say that speculative fiction writers are somehow above YA writing, is like the band geek throwing spit wads at the mathlete. Just sad.
GalleyCat links to several other commetns on the piece, as well as adding his own interpretation of the review.

What's your opinion?

More early love for Suite Scarlett

SCARLETT's a hit! Teen Book Review says

Suite Scarlett is a fantastically fun romp with real, serious parts as well, full of believable characters (even when they're unbelievable). It's a funny, engaging novel about family, crushes, life, and growing up.
And Reading Rants writes
This madcap romantic comedy is my new favorite Maureen Johnson title. Like the classic movies Breakfast at Tiffany's, or Philadelphia Story, it is full of witty repartee and blithe banter, especially between Scarlett and her beloved brother Spencer.
I have a feeling our girl Scarlett is going to be very popular.

Open for business!

Sound the trumpets! Ring the bells! kt literary is open for business!

And already swamped with queries, of course. Before I get too far behind, I'm reminding myself that I pledged to respond to all queries within two weeks (those of you who've sent emails early know I've been burning the midnight oil already). And I've already seen some interesting stuff out there, so woot!

And before I get too busy to say it, or forget it in the rush of work to do, thanks to everyone I spoke to about making this transition. You know who you are. Your advice, encouragement, offers of help, and all around fabulousness helped me make this wonderful decision.
