Zen, or the art of distraction?

| | Comments (6)

We're in a little bit of flux right now at Unfeasible Enterprises, with one home space empty and zen-like, and another waiting for the arrival of dozens of boxes to become a warm and cozy home (office). Which got me thinking about offices and writing spaces. I've seen writer's rooms stuffed to the gills with books and art and inspiration, chock full of lovely distraction. And I've seen clean palates with bare walls and simple desks holding only a computer. Many writers have barely enough room in their lives and homes for a writing nook, let alone a whole office, but if you could have a room of one's own, a la Virginia Woolf, what would it look like? And if you do have your own Writer's Zone, will you share a picture? Here's mine (at least at the moment).

Entertainment options

As the WGA strike rolls on -- a strike we here at kt literary fully support -- a sad fact is that many of our favorite tv shows aren't around to entertain us between marathon sessions of query-reading, shoe-shopping, and deal-making. What to do, what to do?

While I could spend hours mesmerized by HGTV, and the lure of an easy decorating makeover, I'm sure there's other great entertainment out there.

What are you doing during the strike to fill the void? Watching tv on DVD? Catching up on reality shows, or updating your Netflix queue? Running out to the movies to try to see all possible Oscar nominees?

Or using the time to polish your manuscript, or draft a new one? What about reading the recent Newbery, Caldecott and Printz winners?

And speaking of Printz winners, if you haven't already seen John Green of Brotherhood 2.0's video on the Writers Strike, do go watch it. We'll be here when you get back.

Font of Information

A colleague, looking around the website and noticing how I write out the address and much of the text, asked if I had something against capital letters. I could have responded with a history of the genesis of the name "kt" and my decision to carry that formatting into the rest of my official correspondence and logo, etc. Instead I replied:

Yes. They're shifty.
I amuse myself, if no one else.

Technical note

It's come to our attention that this site is a little wonky, albeit still readable, under IE 6.0. It works just fine in Firefox (the official browser of ktliterary.com and Daphne Unfeasible!) and in IE 7.0. Sorry for any snafus that may develop.
