Happy Stuff

June 8th, 2010 • Kate

DizzyClearly, we need a little happy stuff around here, in order to balance yesterday’s downer post. So, let’s talk pets! The kt literary office is blessed with two puppies*, Jake and Dizzy, both currently sprawled on the floor by my feet. I find they make excellent listeners, and I cannot praise enough the emotional high from giving a good belly rub, so that their back feet twitch in excitement.

Are you cat people or dog people? When you need a break from a day of writing, or a bit of a cheer-up after a rejection, who or what do you turn to? Feel free to share pictures!

*For point of clarification, all dogs are puppies, all horses are ponies. Ā Jake and Dizzy are 10 and 9 years old, respectively.

I am both a cat and dog person. We decided not to get another cat after mine died, because she was so bad for my allergies. We were going to not have any pets for a while, but then I wrote an article about people abandoning their pets here in AZ and met my new baby.

Sorry, don't know how to upload a pic, but my doggie is in the pics of the article…

  2. Alicia Says:

I'm totally a cat person all the way. I Love that they're so independent, much like myself. I'm also allergic to dogs, so I really can't choose. I had to put my kitty to sleep a little over a year ago. It was the worst experience of my life. I felt like I was playing god, but couldn't let him suffer anymore. I wish I could post a picture, but having a hard time figuring it out. If you need a visual, think of the dragon from How To Train Your Dragon. My kitty had the same eyes and was all black. *sniff sniff*

  3. Rissa Watkins Says:

Oh and is the pic of Jake or Dizzy? Beautiful dog. he looks big.

  4. Karen Says:

Absolutely a dog person. After our last dog died, I swore no more dogs. I lasted eight years. Now Teddy, my nearly two-year-old Havanese, sleeps on my desk if I work at night, or with his head on my shoulder if I can manage to type one-handed. The best part? He loves everything I write.

  5. Mandy Says:

I agree. All dogs are puppies, even my 11-year-old Keeshound, Rikki.

Not only is he incredibly well trained and rarely a bother, he is a fantastic listener who thinks I'm insanely awesome. And perhaps the best part is that he is a great feet warmer. If I'm sitting at the table working hard on a book or homework, he'll get under the table and lay right where I can put my feet snuggly under his fur. šŸ™‚

  6. Meredith Says:

Dogs for sure! I have a two-year-old Wheaten terrier named Peju (we named him after a winery in Napa, which is ridiculously pretentious but oh well). šŸ˜› He's the kindest, sweetest dog in the whole world, and he's a great writing partner. And by "great writing partner" I mean "he'll hold it if he needs to go but I'm in the middle of writing something and can't bear to take a break."

  7. JJ Beattie Says:

I'm a dog and a cat person but if pushed to choose it would be cats.

My husband says all dogs are he and all cats are she…

  8. Michelle Hodkin Says:

Oh, your puppy is adorable! I am both; cat people and dog people šŸ™‚ I've got 2 cats and 2 dogs, and foster (dogs only) for a bunch of rescue groups. There's nothing like a cat in your lap or looking into those big brown puppy eyes after a rough day.

  9. Rebecca (Fie Eoin) Says:

Cat and Dog person here! We've got three cats (named after fish) and two dogs. In fact, we just got a new puppy named Boudin last tuesday! šŸ˜€ He kept me from reading or writing all week, but he's adorable and I can't really hold it against him.

I do have to say though, a cat curled up on your lap purring is the nicest thing in the world. Even nicer than a puppy licking your face with his little puppy kisses.

  10. Vonna Says:

Mammals. All mammals. Cat dog goat wombat. Love 'em all. Birds place second. Reptiles and amphibians tie for third. Not a fan of insects or spiders.

  11. Rachel Harlan Says:

Dogs, dogs, dogs! My Hannah Lou rules the house… rightly so. She's a randomly bred 9 year old who I adopted almost seven years ago. She's my first listener šŸ™‚ Although I have to admit I'm also fond of Orange Guy, the cat, who likes to swipe Hannah with his claws in. Smart cat.

  12. Sara Says:

I've always had both cats and dogs. We have one puppy now, Polly, a wonderful almost-17yo mutt who kinda looks like a coyote. (She outlived her son, my other dear puppy, Hubert, who died a few years back at 13.) We lost the best cat ever last fall and swore off getting another, until an uncommonly sweet little stray kitty wandered into our house a couple of months back and decided not to leave. šŸ™‚

  13. Kiki Hamilton Says:

Dogs all the way! I have a very cute cockapoo, Molly, who LOVES tennis balls (she must think she's a lab – that little dog who thinks she's a big dog thing) and follows me everywhere I go. She is my writing / talking / listening buddy.

This may sound creepy but actually it's quite nice – my other dog, Ellie, died a couple of years ago at age 13 and she was cremated and is in the most beautiful little carved box that sits under my desk (where she spent half her life) with her pink panther stuffed toy and this beautiful clay cocker spaniel I rest my feet on. It's quite comforting to have her there along with the pictures.

  14. Becky Mahoney Says:

Definitely a cat-person here! I have an aging silver tabby named Holly who keeps me company while I'm writing. She'll just jump up on my bed next to me and bump against my shoulder incessantly so I'll keep petting her, and then she'll eventually settle in and go to sleep. <3

  15. Carrie Harris Says:

DOGS! My childhood dog, Rags, lived to be 24. No, really. Ever since she died, haven't been able to bring myself to get another. At first, because she was irreplaceable. Now because I have 3 year olds. šŸ™‚

  16. Red Boot Pearl Says:

We are fish people right now. I hated fish growing up, because whenever we got them, they would die about a week later. There is nothing grosser in the world than a little fish carcass floating around a fish tank…

But now I have a husband who takes care of the fish and they seem to last a lot longer, plus he disposes of the bodies when they die. It's a win, win…Our daughter and I get to look at the fish and he gets to take care of them.

Someday we'll definitely have a dog, we'd love to have one now, but don't have the space, so fish will have to do. Not quite as cuddly, but it works.

  17. Rachel Pudelek Says:

    A dog person indeed!

My poor little pooch can't stand the lap top! When I write, it fills my lap leaving no room for her. She lays right next to me and the moment I lift the computer from my lap she jumps in its place.

  18. Julia Karr Says:

Cats and Dogs. I have two dogs and three cats (soon to be 4 perhaps, one of my daughters is thinking about finding a home for her cat – with me, of course.)

Since March I have had to have two of my dear little furry friends put to sleep. One kitty, who was aged when I got him, but we had three good years (almost to the day) together. The other was my shepherd/husky mix, Loba, who I had for fifteen of her sixteen years. That was the hardest goodbye ever. I still miss her. This summer when I have my annual "Pie Party" for the neighborhood, we're going to have a Loba memorial service, too. Everyone loved her – she was that kind of dog.

  19. Lisa Aldin Says:

    BOTH CATS AND DOGS!

But, if I'm sad, like, laying on the couch watching the Real Housewives of Insert City Here sad, then my cats are my comfort (well, Salsa, the tortie. Luda, the black cat, does not like me. I think he is happy when I am sad. And he plots to kill me. But that is another story…)

But when I'm angry, stressed, so basically whenever I come home from work, I turn to my dog. She is a GREAT stress reliever. Just taking her on a walk is so peaceful. I love it.

  20. Shannon Says:

Both cats and dogs – and most other animals (not spiders!). I have a six-year-old Mastiff, Gracie. She is the best dog ever, but she is a leaner. So, you have to be ready when you give her a rub – she'll knock you over.

There's Samson – our kitten we rescued the day after Christmas. The boy's got some serious street smarts. He can and does regularly open doors, steals the dog's food – one piece at a time, and generally terrorizes the family at o'dark thirty. And he does it all while he is purring his head off. I don't get much done on my desktop because he chases the mouse (computer mouse) around the screen. He is the most animated animal I have ever owned or met.

Last but not least is Gypsy, out mut kitty. She got all of the left over parts – short legs, long body, a tail ong enough for 2 cats. She can spot a mosquito on the ceiling from the next room. She likes to torture Samson by playing with a toy. He gets up to see what she is doing and TA!DA! she has a pre-warmed nap spot. Smart girl.

  21. Holen Says:

Dogs – all the way šŸ™‚

There's nothing like walking a dog in the morning, or cuddling up w/ the pooch when hubby's working late. Who, besides that adorable, walking garbage disposal, could make you feel like an awesome cook when your kids won't eat their dinner?

  22. Diana Peterfreund Says:

I adore dogs. Rio, my gorgeous, almost-two puppy, is a regular fixture on my blog:

    http://twitpic.com/qw3uh

I'm a serious dog person. I also volunteer with a dog rescue organization and have worked as a dog foster parent.

I was never a big cat person, but I don't have anything against them, and I love my brother's tortoiseshell, Hera. She's a sweetie.

  23. Melissa Gill Says:

I currently have two cats and one mouse. But I love all animals. No time or space for a dog, but someday. Cats are great listeners and very affectionate, at least to their person. I also find the animals at the zoo where I volunteer to be great listeners. Especially our 34 year old female orangutan. I just have to show her my latest shade of lipstick and she gives me her undivided attention.
