as an aside... the BEST iPhone app ever is balloonanimals

I am so intrigued by this series thing. It seems like every book I read lately ends in some sort of cliffhanger begging me to read on... what happened to ending a book and moving on to the next one? Is it just the YA genre in general... or is this happening in other genre's as well?

They might, Liana. But any new books to supersede the titles specified in the contract would need to be mutually agreed upon by both the author and the publisher. Just as the publisher can't say, "Hey, this isn't doing well, write something else," so too can't the author tell his/her editor, "I don't feel like finishing this series, I want to write a book about balloon animals instead."

Both sides need to agree.

Does the publisher ever tell the author the series isn't working but ask them to write other books under that contract?
