Ask Daphne! Revising to resubmit

April 24th, 2009 • Kate

happyshoesStina shares a question from the Absolute Write forums:

If an agent rejects a partial or a full and gives you a reason why, and then you not only fix that problem (with the intent of moving on), but also several other issues the agent didn’t mention but their existence seriously weakened the writing, is it okay to send a note to the agent explaining the changes you made to the ms to see if they would still be interested?

Sorry, Stina, but no means no. The only exception is if the agent SPECIFICALLY MENTIONS that she would be happy to see a revision. Unless you get that, even with all the revisions in the world, it’s still a no.

Sorry the news isn’t more encouraging. Here’s some happy shoes to cheer you up!

Thanks Kate. I already knew the answer, but now I can pass the response to the correct person (that and refer them to the Authress's comment from when you judged the recent MSFV SA contest.) It's one thing for an unpublished author to tell you not to bother; it's another thing when the advice comes from an agent.
