Random Numbers for your perusal

Curious about the breakdown in queries I receive? I hope so, otherwise I’ve wasted a huge amount of time tracking these things by the numbers! Nathan Bransford shared some of his recent stats the other day, and inspired me to do the same. So, at the time I read Nathan’s post, I had 157 unread emails in my query folder. A few of them turned out to be misdirected, or better sent to other folders to deal with, which left me with 151 queries.

This article is a Q&A with four young editors — again, I’d take umbrage at the term “young editors” — they are the heads of their imprints or divisions, with many years of experience below their belts. Still, they provide some interesting insight into publishing.

Are you a multi-tasker?

I read fellow Colorado literary agent Rachelle Gardner’s blog post the other day about the Zero Inbox, and though I could manage to pat myself on a back a bit for usually keeping my inbox down to a manageable level — I only leave messages in it that I have yet to act on, and try to keep those to a minimum — the truth is I see this as part and parcel of one of the problems in multitasking.

Confusion Begone!

Even tried to figure out just where in the big scheme of the publishing world Poppy fits in? Or how First Second relates to Square Fish, and who Schwartz, Wade, Balzer and Bray are? Well, though Rexroth has been asking me for a while to draw up a map to keep track of all the publishing world’s imprints and how they relate to one another, I’m delighted to announce that I no longer have to!
