What about Jennifer Weiner? She’s excellent at portraying realistic women and does it with style and wit. I’d especially recommend In Her Shoes, The Guy Not Taken, and Goodnight Nobody.
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (don’t judge it by the horrendous movie) also sprung to mind. It’s quite funny but deals seriously with the relationship between Mark and Bridget. It might be a bit more on the comedy side but is quite brilliant.
Though he tends to deal with male characters, she also might want to take a look at Nick Hornby.
